DC Design is a social impact design firm. We use Human Centered Design to help solve the world’s biggest problems. Our work includes redesigning aspects of the foster care system alongside nonprofits and business collaborators, partnering with governments to develop and implement strategies for reducing jail recidivism, consulting architects, physicians and nurses on designing optimal emergency departments, and developing award-winning educational programs to address challenges around physical disability. Our specialty is in multi-stakeholder design, which involves understanding the needs of diverse groups of people, finding key points of agreement, and identifying opportunities to create novel solutions to the challenges those stakeholders face. Our consulting services, educational design workshops, and products are aimed at creating a lasting positive impact on society and helping others do the same. At our core is the belief that those who experience a problem first hand should play a central role in solving it. We teach business and non-profit leaders, government officials, entrepreneurs, and students how to unlock the creativity they never knew they had by applying the same principles we use every day. Those we work with and train through our design process develop the insights needed to identify and solve the world’s most challenging problems.

San Diego & Imperial Counties Labor Council

The San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council is the local central body affiliate of the AFL-CIO founded in 1891. We represent 200,000 working families across San Diego & Imperial Counties. At the Labor Council, we believe that ALL workers deserve a voice on the job. Together, we fight for higher wages and quality healthcare, housing that is affordable and equal pay for equal work. We represent workers from a wide variety of industries and professions who want a seat at the negotiating table and in the halls of power. We are firefighters standing with teachers, nurses and construction tradespeople standing with home healthcare aides, and professors standing with hotel workers. We are grocery workers walking shoulder to shoulder with truck drivers, hospital techs, janitors and zoo employees. Our power is in our ability to come together and fight for one another, and for all working people.

Community Living Campaign

At the Community Living Campaign, we’re working toward a San Francisco where we can all live and thrive in our homes and neighborhoods as we grow older. We started in 2008 as a neighborhood-based way to provide seniors and adults with disabilities with what they need to live a good life. This need continues to grow as our population ages and income disparities widen. We bring greater joy, health, and connectedness to San Francisco seniors and people with disabilities through community-building, empowerment, and advocacy. We organize free activities and programs like computer classes, healthy aging workshops, senior exercise groups, and grocery delivery. These activities offer practical support and teach valuable skills. But most importantly, they create opportunities for folks to make the friendships they need to age well at home. Studies show that only 20% of what people need to age at home comes from formal services – the other 80% comes from friends, faith groups, and other community connections. Meeting the needs of an aging population is a huge undertaking. So we also build coalitions, bringing together neighbors, community organizations, businesses, and City agencies to organize and advocate around issues that are too big for any of us to solve alone. Most recently, these have included the SF Tech Council and the Dignity Fund Coalition. Together, we can create an inclusive San Francisco where people of all ages and abilities can truly live “in community” – with all of the rich relationships and opportunities that define a good life.

enFocus Inc

enFocus is a nonprofit dedicated to building better communities through talent attraction, innovation and entrepreneurship. We bring an “entrepreneurial focus” to communities employing recent graduates to work on innovation projects through internships or two-year Fellowships. Fellows address our communities’ challenges by working with sponsor organizations and also receive dedicated time to pursue their own entrepreneurial or social ventures. Fellows have access to an involved network of mentors and professional development opportunities.
