I excel at creative and rapid-paced multidisciplinary problem solving, building elegant and reliable solutions. I studied mechanical engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, focused on robotics and automation, and am constantly pushing myself to learn new subjects independently and then leverage those new skills in my work. On any given day I may be working on 2D or 3D CAD software, a variety of 3D printers, manual and CNC machining, creating documents for patent application, electrical and sensor design, networking and server administration, or programming from web frontends and HMIs to backend servers to embedded systems.
At Wildfire Robotics I designed and coded our fully waterproof control system, selecting low-cost, commercial components (e.g. Raspberry Pi) to create hot-swappable nodes distributed along a several kilometer robotic wildfire containment barrier, including varied rugged and redundant sensors, controlled by a web interface with touchscreen and joystick connected to the robot's wireless mesh network. I manage git deployment to either a real-hardware test system I developed or actual hardware in the field. I also manage various IT needs for a small team and design mechanical components as needed or when particularly inspired. I create CAD models of parts and full assemblies, perform motion analysis, and create drawings for manufacturing and patent application.
At HEXBUG I prototyped and tested concept toys from industrial design concept sketches as well as my own ideas. I used Creo, SolidWorks, UV-resin 3D printers, and parts on-hand to iterate quickly. I also coded a PID ball-balancing robot with data-logging in C using a very limited microcontroller, sensor, and motor system. I prototyped and developed a toy line from my original idea with a leading role through the design process up to production, engaging with several teams to coordinate and expedite the process.
In two internships with Warrior Manufacturing I designed hydraulic systems and custom Class 1 Division 2 hazardous area sensors for automated oilfield drilling equipment, such as a linear position sensor for roughly one third of the cost of an off-the-shelf sensor, with shorter lead times by using common on-hand parts. I also designed a number of custom manufactured parts made using CNC and manual machining, and designed weldments in various metals and alloys. I performed failure analysis on a fall arrest harness for overhead equipment and re-designed it. My design passed all testing and was also easier to assemble and disassemble.
