I hold a bachelor’s degree in technology in metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. I have nearly 50 years of experience in automotive components manufacturing. I have worked in Manufacturing, Process Control, Design, Quality Assurance, Marketing, R&D, and General Management. After graduating in 1975, I joined Bharat Gears Ltd as a Graduate Engineer Trainee. In 1987, I moved to Delhi to join Sona Steering Systems Ltd, later renamed Sona Koyo Steering Systems Ltd. I held various positions at Sona Koyo, including Chief Operating Officer, Dy. Managing Director and Executive Vice Chairman. At Sona Koyo Steering Systems, I spearheaded the Company’s implementation of the Toyota Production System (TPS), Total Quality Management (TQM), and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). I led the Company to be the recipient of the Deming Prize in 2003 and the TPM Excellence Awards in 2008 and 2017. I was involved in setting up the Sona Skill Development Center, the Group’s initiative to skill people for manufacturing industries, which I headed for three years as its Managing Director. I recently retired as the Chief Technology Officer of Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd, also known as Sona Comstar. In this role, I was responsible for developing new technology partnerships and building competencies in manufacturing excellence. I am a member of the core group that drives the Visionary Leaders for Manufacturing Program (VLFM). VLFM was jointly launched by IIM (Calcutta), IIT (Kanpur), and IIT(Madras) in association with CII. The Governments of India and Japan support it and aim to create visionary leaders for Indian manufacturing. I am a member of the Governing Council of the Indian Society for Quality. I am a member of the Governing Council of the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT), an industry-academia interface organization established by IIT Delhi that supports the innovation ecosystem. I have been widely recognized for my impact on quality management in India, Japan, and other countries, earning me numerous prestigious awards. These include the Ashoka Award 2006 by the Indian Society for Quality, the Ishikawa-Kano Silver Medal 2022 by the Asian Network for Quality, and the Dr. Krishan Kumar Award for Excellence in Quality 2022-23 by the Society of Automotive Engineers India Foundation. I authored ‘Conceptual Thinking in Daily Life,’ published in 2017 jointly by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and CII.
