Celso A. Reis leads the “Glycobiology in Cancer” group at i3S / Ipatimup and is Professor at the University of Porto, Portugal.
He is a Board of Directors member of the i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, Universidade do Porto (https://www.i3s.up.pt).
Celso´s research focus on the role of glycosylation in human cancer. His research focus on the molecular mechanisms controlling glycosylation in cancer cell biology, more specifically the role of glycosyltransferases regulating the biosynthesis of glycans in cancer and the application of glycans as biomarkers and therapeutic targets in human diseases.
He has developed novel products (monoclonal antibodies) and strategies to detect and characterize cancer, and to be able to improve cancer treatment based on the identification of the key glycans controlling cancer cell communication, glycans that can be used as markers for cancer patient stratification, as well as glycans and glycoconjugate that can be used as novel targets in cancer therapy.
Celso A. Reis has led several major research projects funded by national (FCT) and by international agencies, including: the European Union (H2020, 7FP), AICR / Worldwide Cancer Research, the Institut Merieux Research Grant and several projects funded by the national and international Pharmaceutical industry.
He has published more than 187 peer-reviewed papers, with over 10700 citations and with a h-index of 48 (Scopus, 2020). His publications include papers in journals such as: Cancer Cell, Nature Cell Biology, Cancer Research, Nature Reviews in Cancer, Int. J. Cancer, PNAS, JBC, JACS, BBA, FEBS Lett, Molecular Cellular Proteomics, Oncogene, Cancer Letters, Mucosal Immunology, Cellular Immunology, Journal Clinical Investigation, among others.
Celso A. Reis holds several international patents and he has developed unique monoclonal antibodies directed to glycoproteins that are currently commercialised worldwide by diverse international companies.
He has been a member of numerous international scientific committees boards and evaluation panels, including: the Life and Health Sciences Council of FCT (Ministry of Science, Portugal), and the European Union H2020. He was the Chairman of several international meetings, such as the International Glycosyltransferase Gyco-T 2014, the Glupor13. Currently he is the Secretary General of the International Glycoconjugate Organization (IGO), where he is also the Portuguese national representative. He is also the national representative of Portugal for the International Glycoconjugate Organization.
