Communities In Schools of Washington is part of the nation's largest and most effective organization dedicated to keeping kids in school and helping them succeed in life. Communities In Schools began operating in Washington in 1991 at the urging of numerous Washington state employers. Their concern developed in an atmosphere where schools were expected to fulfill multiple roles—as service providers, coordinators, interventionists—that threatened to overwhelm their capacity to teach. Business and education leaders were impressed with the comprehensive and coordinated strategy that Communities In Schools brought to schools in other parts of the country by addressing the immediate needs of students while freeing teachers to teach. Today, the Communities In Schools of Washington network helps more than 54,000 students a year. Each of our 11 affiliates works closely with schools, social services, businesses and volunteers in their communities to connect young people with the resources they need to learn and grow: mentors and tutors, after-school care, family services, health care, food, clothing, school supplies and more so they can focus on learning. Without these basic supports, kids face daunting barriers to success. The Communities In Schools of Washington state office strengthens its network by providing affiliates with support in operations, service delivery, partnership and resource development, and public relations and marketing.
