ISMAC Institute for Macromolecular Studies The Institute for Macromolecular Studies (ISMAC) is a research Institute of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) created by merging three previous CNR Institutes working in the field of macromolecules: Istituto di Chimica delle Macromolecole of Milan (ICM); Istituto di Studi Chimico-Fisici di Macromolecole Sintetiche e Naturali of Genoa (IMAG); Istituto di Ricerche e Sperimentazione Laniera “Oreste Rivetti” of Biella (IRSL). During the years the Institute has reached the scientific excellence in Italy in the fields of macromolecular chemistry, physics and technology. The ISMAC research groups are active in the research areas related to synthesis, properties, characterization of synthetic and biological macromolecules and their applications in life science, rubber technology, advanced texiles, optoelectronics and packaging. The institute has many links through its research program with a number of national and international research institutions which comprises both academic and industrial research centers. Numerous close contacts and joint research projects, on investigations of basic phenomena appearing during synthesis and processing of polymers, with various companies exist. The ISMAC headquarter is located in Milan (former ICM). Furthermore the ISMAC CNR Institute has two distinct Sections: Section of Biella (former IRSL); Section of Genoa (former IMAG). On the average, about 110 persons a year are working in ISMAC. In 2015 there were 40 permanent scientists, 47 postdoc and graduate and undergraduate students in chemistry, technical (13) and administration staff (14).
